Winter Driving Safety Tips

Time To Talk Safety, People!

Sloppy road conditions during winter often lead to accidents, especially here in the Ann Arbor area. Time to talk safety, people! The weather is severe with snow all over the place, but you still have to go to work, take the kids to school, get groceries and leave the house for all your errands. With a few precautions, you can leave your house and come back safely.

We’ve looked at various stats and found that in some instances, 15% of all vehicle accidents occur during winter. Yes, you probably know the rules of the road and basic safety precautions, but a brief refresher is always in order.

Here are some of the safety tips that you will find useful this winter:

• Prepare your vehicle: safety precautions begin even before you get on the road. Your vehicle’s condition is a predictor of safety. Regular tune-ups and maintenance, like paying attention to vehicle’s battery, wipers, tires, coolant, brakes, and other systems. While this is not only applicable for winter seasons, it is quite important to be extra careful during this season. The reason is simple; there are more dangers on the road now than other seasons.

• Prepare yourself: having put your vehicle in the best condition you can, it is important that you are in the right state. You must drive slowly now because the rod is slippery from snow and ice. Just before you leave the house, check the news or popular navigation apps for present weather conditions, and accidents that may be on your way to your destination. Leave a few minutes early so you’re not too rushed and stressed while driving.

• Prepare for emergencies and accidents: Despite your precautions, accidents caused by other drivers, as well as Mother Nature, can still happen. Vehicles can break down; power poles and trees can fall down. You can at least be as prepared as possible.
Keep tools like flashlights, jumper cables, emergency lights or flares, and blankets in your vehicle in case of accidents. This will be handy to use until help arrives.

The winter season is an amazing time to enjoy with family and friends, with ice skating, hot chocolate and Netflix binges. Stay safe so you can enjoy it, and the best way is to prepare yourself to drive, to make sure your car is in tip-top shape, and have those emergency items with you at all times.
